Dog dental care guide

Dogs use their mouths for more than just eating, and their teeth have a lot of work to do.

They use them to play, explore and get a taste of their new surroundings – so it goes without saying that keeping their dental hygiene in check is vital.

Just like us, dogs can develop rotten teeth and gums if their dental hygiene is neglected, which can cause some serious troubles for your furry friend.

But how exactly do you look after their teeth and keep them clean?

The experts at Pet Shop Online reveal all in this article.

Brush their teeth with tasty toothpaste

Teeth brushing is the foundation of good oral health, and just like with us, it’s recommended that you brush your canine’s teeth daily – twice if you can.

If you don’t really have time for this, once a week will suffice. After all, it’s better than not brushing them at all.

Despite them not loving it at first, most dogs will learn to tolerate and even appreciate having their teeth cleaned.

Introduce them to a specifically-designed, dog-appropriate dog toothpaste first – letting them lick it off your finger.

Once they’ve shown that they enjoy the toothpaste, start to run your finger along the inside of their mouth, making sure to follow the gum line.

If your dog is comfortable with this, you can introduce a toothbrush after a few days – allowing them to lick the brush with toothpaste first before actually putting it in their mouth.

When they grow accustomed to this, it’s time to start brushing those teeth!

Target the front teeth first, using gentle, circular motions and stopping regularly to allow them to lick the brush as a reward.

Stock up on dental chews

Dental chew treats aren’t only something to satisfy your fur baby’s cravings for tasty treats, but they’re also a great way to keep their teeth clean.

These types of products are designed to minimise the build-up of plaque and tartar, and they’re available in an array of different shapes and sizes.

Some feature ridges and nubs that dig into the crevices between a dog’s teeth to encourage blood flow through the gums.

It’s not uncommon for a dog’s breath to be quite unpleasant.

Certain dental chews are formulated to help improve your dog’s breath, so if bad breath is a problem your dog is experiencing, make way for fresher-smelling kisses and cuddles.

If you’re concerned about your pup’s breath, it’s not a bad idea to check with your vet to make sure it’s not a sign of an underlying health issue.

Attend regular cleaning appointments

An essential way to protect your canine companion’s oral health is through regular cleaning appointments with your vet.

By keeping up with professional cleaning appointments, your vet will be able to identify and treat any problems that otherwise would’ve gone unnoticed, and check for any early warning signs of serious issues.

Most dogs need oral exams and cleanings at least once a year but breeds that are more susceptible to periodontal disease (like Bulldogs, Dachshunds and Yorkshire Terriers) may require more frequent cleanings every six months or so.
